A Guide to Tropical Produce

Category: ,

If you’ve ever been on vacation to the tropics, you’ll know that there’s something special about the fruits and vegetables that grow in that climate. The vibrant colors and sweet, full flavors make tropical produce that little bit extra special. Luckily for you, here at NetCost Market, we’ve got some of the best tropical produce around so you can get a taste of the tropics from the comfort of your own home!

Mangoes are one of America’s favorite tropical fruits. Apart from their overly addictive flavor, they also contain a huge array of important vitamins and minerals including zeaxanthin which reduces the progression of age-related macular degeneration. If you’re looking for a way to incorporate mangoes into your diet, try adding them to a healthy green salad to give it more of a flavor punch!

If you’ve not yet discovered lychees, then you’re in for a real treat! From the outside, they may look dry and crusted, but once you break through that hard skin, you’ll find yourself presented with the deliciously sweet and satisfying flesh underneath. Lychees are popular in South Asia, but they’re fast becoming a favorite right here in the US. Lychees contain Oligonol, an anti-oxidant that is proven to help your body in fighting influenza (flu) virus!

Starfruit is another fruit that originates from South Asia and there are both sweet and sour varieties. As this fruit can be eaten whole, it’s a great choice for smoothies and salads. Due to its extremely high fiber content, starfruit is ideal for those on a weight loss diet as it will keep you fuller for longer than other fruits and vegetables. It also has a relatively high amount of protein for a fruit, so it’s a good plant-based source for those that want to avoid animal products.

Papaya is a relatively popular tropical fruit and rightly so! It has an almost creamy texture and a light, mildly sweet flavor, not unlike a melon. The great thing about papaya is its versatility. It can be pureed for sweet or savory sauces, made into papaya soup, or even frozen into a sorbet! Papaya is a huge source of vitamin K which helps the body absorb calcium. In this sense, papaya is a great fruit to help strengthen bones and for healthy teeth, nails, and hair.

Dragon Fruit

Dragon fruit looks like some kind of alien fruit from another dimension, but in fact, it’s native to southern Mexico and Central America. The exotic looking outside skin is contrasted with a rather drab looking grey pulp that tastes like a mixture between pear and kiwi fruit. Dragon fruit is, however, an extremely nutrient dense food, and it contains flavonoids which have been proven to promote better brain health and to reduce the risk of heart disease.
