How to Eat Healthy on Vacation: Five Rules to Help You Stick to Your Diet

Category: ,

We all love a good vacation! It’s a time to kick back, relax, and get to know new and interesting cultures which of course includes discovering new, indulgent cuisines! But, for those of us who want to stick to strict diets, there’s often lots of temptation on vacation which can lead to anxiety about eating and put some people off going away altogether. Never fear! Here at NetCost Market, we’ve come up with five great rules to follow to ensure you can enjoy your vacation and stick to that strict diet!

1. Plan meal times

Planning when you’re going to eat is a great habit to get into whether on vacation or not! But, it’s particularly important when away as it ensures you aren’t tempted by all the wonderfully indulgent food you come across in between mealtimes. It allows you to savor the food when the time comes, ensuring you still get that “I’m on vacation” feeling while keeping the pounds off.

2. Enjoy breakfast

A large, healthy breakfast is important because it stops those midday cravings that often lead to overindulgence. Every culture in the world eats breakfast, and they all have healthy options. Try researching what the local, healthy breakfast option is before you arrive and explore this rather than waiting until you’re craving food and overeating on the most indulgent food they offer!

3. Cook for yourself

Enjoying local cuisine doesn’t just need to mean visiting local restaurants. It can also mean sampling the local produce from local markets and artisan producers or farmers! Whether you’re in the south of France, Himalayan foothills or simply upstate New York, there’s local markets full of fresh and exciting food that can make cooking for yourself in a self-catering apartment an experience in itself, and a healthy one too!

4. Drink plenty of water

People mainly go to warmer countries for vacation, and there’s often some alcohol involved too. Drinking plenty of water ensures you’re not just eating because you’re in fact thirsty, which is a common mistake people make. Try carrying a refillable bottle with you everywhere you go. This is also a good idea to ensure you don’t suffer dehydration sickness or become too tired!

5. Sharing is caring

Whether you’re on vacation with friends or family, sharing food is a great idea! It allows you to really cut down on how much you’re eating while being able to try everything on offer. What’s more, most countries have a culture of food sharing as it’s a great way for people to get together and socialize, so whether it’s tapas in Spain or Dim Sum in China, make the most of these kinds of meals!

Vacation is a time to enjoy yourself, but it’s also important that you don’t let your routine and hard work with regards to your diet slip! Try following these simple rules and you’ll have a fun, enlightening, and healthy vacation, ready to face real life again once you return, minus the few extra pounds!
