One thing that seems to be a favorite across the board is the homemade grilled cheese sandwich! Cheese lovers everywhere know that this American classic has become more than a recent trend. Who could resist the buttery, cheesy sandwich- especially when you add fun, new ingredient combinations? Plus, the simplicity of the recipe makes it completely fool proof! Serious Eats’ article, The Art of the Perfect Grilled Cheese, will absolutely inspire you to get experimenting with this simple sandwich, but here’s our spin on the classic comfort food.

Gourmet Grilled Cheese Recipe:

  • 2 slices of freshly baked bread from the NetCost Bakery
  • 1 tablespoon of real butter
  • 1/4 cup grated cheese (We recommend trying something besides the standard American or Provolone cheese. Go with a high quality, artisanal cheese that melts nicely… maybe a sharp Cheddar, a Gruyere cheese, Monterrey Jack, or even Fontina! Our favorite combination is a buttery Brie and Chevre with a slice of tomato!)
*Bonus points for adding bacon, ham, pepperoni, spinach, arugula, fried green tomatoes, figs, basil, or even kimchee!

Set the burner to a low heat setting, and, once it starts to heat up, add the butter to your frying pan. Once melted, coat both slices of the bread with the melted butter butter, and set the top piece aside. Next, pile your ingredients onto the bread, place the lid on the pan, and cook the sandwich for 2-3 minutes. Once the cheese starts to melt, top the sandwich with the other piece of bread and flip. After another minute or two, your sandwich is ready to go!
