Category:

We’re obsessed with what we put in our bodies, making sure that we get only the best of the best, but what about our canine friends? They don’t have a choice about the quality of their dog food, so it’s your responsibility as their owner to ensure they get the best quality, nutritious and balanced diet! Lots of mass-produced dog foods use processing methods that aren’t fit for human consumption, so why would you let your dog eat them all the time?! Keep your furry companions happy with some of these healthy and exciting homemade dog food recipes brought to you by NetCost Market.

Make sure to change your dog’s diet gradually and consult your veterinarian if your dog has any health problems!

Raw Dog Food

A simple place to start is with some raw dog food. This consists of a balance of raw meat and vegetables to give your best friend a great mixture of vitamins and protein to keep them strong and healthy. It can be made in bulk and kept refrigerated for a few days.

You will need:

1 ½ Cups of raw meat (Chicken, beef, lamb, turkey, venison, or a mixture of these), ½ cup raw offal (heart, liver or kidney), 1 tbsp cod liver oil, 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, lettuce, squash, sprouts are all good choices), 1 crushed tablet of dog vitamin supplement (you can often buy ones specific to your dog’s breed), 2 tbsp bone meal.

How to make:

  1. Chop the meat and offal into bite-size pieces.
  2. Blend the vegetables separately until a smooth mixture is formed.
  3. Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl or with a KitchenAid.

Milo’s Meatloaf

3 cups of ground meat (any will do, but make sure it is boneless!), 2 whole eggs, ½ cup finely chopped vegetables (make sure you include carrots as vitamin A is important for canine health), ½ cup cottage cheese, ½ cup rolled oats.

How to make:

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 350 F
  2. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl
  3. Place the ingredients in a loaf tin as you would a normal meatloaf and bake for 35 to 40 minutes.
  4. Once done, allow the loaf to cool and slice into desired size servings.

The Canine’s Chicken Casserole

Chicken casserole is a classic winter warmer, and this goes for your dog too! This simple version of the dish is modified for dogs, so they can eat a great dinner while you tuck into yours!

  1. Chop the chicken into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Add all the ingredients to a pan and bring to a simmer.
  3. Allow to simmer for 15 minutes.
  4. Allow to cool and serve as desired!

Awfully Good Offal

Offal is an amazingly vitamin rich meat for both dogs and humans, but if you don’t like the idea of eating hearts, kidneys or liver, the same will not go for your dog! They love it, and incorporating it into some tasty meals is a great way of getting them to be healthy when eating they’re favorite dish!

You will need:

2 cups offal (heart, lung, kidney, liver or a mixture), 1 cup mixed chopped vegetables (carrot, potato, parsnip – you can use the peel of these too), 1 cup cooked pasta.

How to make:

  1. Boil the offal for around 25 to 30 minutes.
  2. Remove to organs from the pot and next add the mixed vegetables and pasta to the stock.
  3. Drain the vegetables and pasta from the stock once soft and chop the organs into bite-size pieces.
  4. Add the mixture together and allow it to cool.
  5. Serve as desired.
