Summer is nearly officially upon us and before it passes by, it’s a good idea to start getting into summer mode. This, of course, includes cocktails, but for those who don’t drink, or simply would like a non-alcoholic alternative, we at NetCost Market have come up with a list of the best summer mocktails to get you in the summery mood, without the booze! Mocktails mimic the refreshing, summery flavors of traditional cocktails without the alcohol, and in some instances, can be even more refreshing than their alcoholic counterpart. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the summer in style this year!
One of the classics, the Virgin Mojito is minty and sweet beverage.
You will need (per glass): half a lime, three teaspoons of sugar, 8 mint leaves, 200ml cloudy apple juice, lots of crushed ice.
Simply chop and muddle half a lime with 3 teaspoons of sugar in the bottom of a long glass, add eight fresh mint leaves, then top with crushed ice to about half an inch below the rim of the glass. Pour in some cloudy apple juice up to the level that the ice has reached and with a teaspoon mix the drink vigorously for 15-20 seconds, making sure all the sugar, lime, and mint is well mixed in. Top with extra crushed ice, a sprig of mint for garnish and a straw and there you have it!
The Shirley Temple
A simple one, and a great way for children to feel involved in the grandeur of a cocktail party as this majestic mocktail really looks the part.
You will need: lemon & lime flavored soda, non-alcoholic grenadine syrup, and 1 maraschino cherry, cubed ice.
In a tall glass (plastic if being used by young children), add ice cubes, then pour in the lemon & lime flavored soda. Next, slowly pour in the grenadine so it bleeds slowly down the glass, making a ripple effect. Lastly, top with a maraschino cherry and a spiral straw for that party look!
The cool, refreshing flavor of cucumber is the perfect way to hydrate during the hottest days of summer. This simple yet complexly flavored mocktail is the perfect accompaniment to light summer lunches.
You will need: still lemonade (freshly made is best!), white grape juice, cucumber (thinly sliced), lemon (sliced), mint leaves, cubed ice.
In a large tumbler glass, add three or four ice cubes, four or five slices of cucumber, and one slice of lemon. Next, pour in the lemonade and grape juice at exactly the same time so they mix on impact. Stir slowly about four times, slowly drawing out the refreshing flavors of the cucumber, decorate with mint leaves and there you have it!
The Ginger Ninja
If you like a little kick in your mocktails, this gingery beverage is the perfect drink for you!
You will need (per glass): a cocktail shaker, three thin slices of ginger, juice of half a lime, 75ml of sweet pineapple juice, cubed ice, red chili (optional garnish)
In the shaker, use a muddler to crush the three thin slices of ginger so they are well broken up. Next, add the lime juice and the pineapple juice and then shake hard with lots of ice for about 30 seconds (so that foam forms when it is poured). Double strain into a martini glass and float two or three very thin slices of red chili in the middle of the glass to top it off.
Mocktails are the new way to enjoy the summer and keep well hydrated. Once you’ve tried those listed here, why not get creative and try making your own!
